On March 15th, 1953, in Doi Co, Ban Sac, Diem Mac commune, Dinh Hoa district, Thai Nguyen province, Ho Chi Minh President signed Decree No.147/SL setting up National cinema business and first Vietnam photography, marking the appearance of Vietnam Revolutionary Cinema. Nevertheless, nearly 20 years later, the cinema industry has opened its separate event –the  Vietnam  Film Festival.

The Vietnam Film Festival appeared in 1970 (periodically organized by Vietnam Cinema Department twice five years) is the most senior cinema event and simultaneously the biggest of the cinema industry. Unlike International Film Festivals, Vietnam Film Festival has to carry out social-political tasks. Therefore, the Vietnam Film Festivals are regularly organized in shifts at provinces and cities in every region. The Vietnam Film Festival often last within 05 days, with the opening-closing activities, film-presenting and exchange between film-makers and audience, seminar – talk among activists, excursion – exchange between artists and local people, film-marking – prize-awarding at all articles.

The Vietnam Film Festival awards prizes, including Gold Lotus, Silver Lotus and merit certificates for works, at the same time individual prizes at kinds of collectives: Plastic film, Short-episode video film, documentary film, scientific film, animated film, except for television films with many episodes.

 

VIETNAM FILM FESTIVAL – FOUR CENTURY ROAD TO LOOK BACK

Vietnam Film Festival – a place to collect the best films of the most excellent film directors of Vietnam Cinema selected in the nation starting from 1970, four centuries of film festival selected many excellent cinema works loved by domestic and international people. The  first Vietnam Film Festival in 1970

The First Film Festival was held in Hanoi, which lasted for a week from 18 to 25 August 1970. The 2nd Vietnam Film Festival was held from February 28 to March 15, 1973 in Hanoi.

The festival marks the bumper crop of documentary film series received the Golden Lotus: “Chung con nho Bac”, “Luy thep Vinh Linh”, “Chien thang duong 9 Nam Lao”, “Nhung co gai Ngu Thuy”, “ Ho chua nuoc Mau Son”, “Ghi chep tren dong bang Quang Ngai”, “Chu y! Thuoc tru sau”.  

The first film of Vietnnam revolution cinemaChung mot dong song” (produced in 1959) was awarded the Golden Lotus, along with films: “Con chim vanh khuyen”, “Chuyen vo chong anh Luc”, “Chi Tu Hau”, “Hai nguoi linh” and “Duong ve que me”.

The best actor award belong to actor Huy Cong (as a road patrol in the film Ga),  actor Tue Minh (as Huong in the film “Vo chong anh Luc”) received the best actress.

The thirst Vietnam Film Festival in 1975

The thirst Vietnam Film Festival  was held in Hai Phong city from March 15 25,1975. The Festival marked the success of the film “Den hen lai len” (by director Tran Vu) with a series of awards for films and individuals: best Film; best director; best film (Nguyen Dang Bay film) actor best actress (Nhu Quynh).

Shared the Golden Lotus for best film at the festival is the film “Em be Ha Noi” (directed by Hai Ninh) and “Bai ca ra tran” (director Tran Dac).

Golden Lotus for documentary film belonged to the film “Ha noi – ban anh hung ca”. In 1978, this film took part Army Festival in Hungary and won first prize.

The fourth Vietnam Film Festival in 1977

The 5th Vietnam Film Festival in 1980

The 5th Vietnam Film Festival took place from May 12 19, 1980 in Hanoi. The festival  with the participation of numerous artists and enthusiastic interest of audiences. In the field of feature films, three films won the Golden Lotus beyond the film “Canh dong hoang” (director Hong Sen), “Nhung nguoi da gap” (director Tran Vu); “Me vang nha” (director Tran Khanh Du).

Silver Lotus Award was awarded to film “Moi tinh dau” (directed by Hai Ninh), “Toi loi cuoi cung” (directed by Tran Phuong), “Mua gio chuong” (director Hong Sen). Best actress award belongs Thuy Lien (as role Sau Linh in the film “Mua gio chuong”) and Phuong Thanh (as role Hien in the film “ca sau trong toi loi cuoi cung ”). The actor The Anh (as role Ba Duy in the film “Moi tinh dau”) and Lam Toi (as role Ba Do in the film “Canh dong hoang ”) was awarded the best actoc.

Golden Lotus for documentary films genre belong to the film: “Duong ve To quoc”,  “Nguyen Ai Quoc den voi Lenin va Phan boi”.

Three animated films have been awarded Golden Lotus: “Au Co- Lac Long Quan”, “Ong trang tha dieu”, “De men phieu luu ky” and five film received Silver Lotus.

The 6th Vietnam Film Festival  in 1983

The 6th Vietnam Film Festival was held in Ho Chi Minh City in 1983, The festival continues to demonstrate the appeal of the special events of Vietnamese movies.

In the film category, Golden Lotus was awarded for the film “Thi xa trong tam tay” (director Dang Nhat Minh) and “Ve noi gio cat” (directed by Huy Thanh); Award of the best scripts Dang Nhat Huy Thanh; best director: Tran Phuong (Hy vong cuoi cung) best actress: Xuan Huong (Ve noi gio cat), Dieu Thuan (Ngay ay ben dong lam, tro ve Sam Sao) and Mong Tuyen (Tinh yeu cua em), best actor: Ly Huynh (Vung gio xoay) and Bui Cuong (Chi Pheo), best Camera: Le Dinh India (Ve noi gio cat), and Nguyen Huu Tuan (Vthi xa trong tam tay).

The 8th Vietnam Film Festival in 1988

The 8th Vietnam Film Festival was held in Da Nang from March 15-22, 1988. The festival marks the return impression of artist Tra Giang. The 15 th  Vietnam Film Festival in 2007

The 15th Vietnam Film Festival was successfully organised in the northern province of Nam Dinh. The festival saw the competition of 113 films in all genres, including 25 documentaries, nine scientific films and 17 animated films by 28 film companies took place from November  21-24, 2007.

The winners included the feature “Ha Noi, Ha Noi” co-produced by the Viet Nam Writers’ Association Film Studio and the Yunnan Ethnic Minority Film Studio of China, and the scientific film “Su Song O Rung Cuc Phuong” (Life in Cuc Phuong National Park) made by the Central Scientific Documentary Film Studio.

“Ha Noi, Ha Noi” film also won the Viet Nam Cinematography Association’s prize for the most favourite film selected by audiences.

Three other feature films won Silver Lotus prizes, including “Chuyen Cua Pao” (Pao’s story) made by the Feature Film Studio 1, “Dong Mau Anh Hung” (The Rebel) by Chanh Phuong Ltd. Co., “Mua Len Trau” (Buffalo Boy) by Giai Phong Studio.

The 16 th  Vietnam Film Festival in 2009

The 16 th  Vietnam Film Festival was held in Ho Chi Minh City from December 8-12, 2009 with paticipation of 29 domestic and foreign production companies with 99 films in four categories: feature films, documentaries, scientific films and cartoons.

Golden Lotus was given to film “Dung dot” (Director and scriptwriter Dang Nhat Minh, Camera: Richard Conners - Vu Duc Tung; actor: Minh Huong, Matt Korchs, Thach Kim Long, ect.

The film “14 ngay thep” won Audience Favorite Award . Best Director Award was given to director Bui Thac Chuyen (film “Choi voi”). Best Screenwriter: Dang Nhat Minh (film “Dung dot”). Award Best Actor was awarded to actor Dustin Nguyen (film “Huyen thoai bat tu”). Best supporting Actor: Binh Minh (film “14 ngay phep”). Best Actress: Do Nguyen Lan Ha (film “Trai tim be bong”). In Video film  genre, Golden was awarded the film “Muoi ba ben nuoc”. In documentary, science film. THE 17TH VIETNAM FILM FESTIVAL   – FOR A RENOVATED AND INTEGRATED VIETNAM CINEMA

The 17th Vietnam Film Festival with the theme "For a Renovated and Integrated Vietnamese Cinema” will be held at 20 pm on December 15-17, in  the central province of Phu Yen. This year’s festival marks four decades of the Vietnam Film Festival since the first in August 1970. The festival will honor artists who contributed to the development of the movie industry in this period.

Three exchange activities between artists and audience, students, army officers will be held at Phu Yen university, 910 Air Force regiment and Hai Rieng town-let (Song Hinh district). On December 15th, at Dien Hong Cultural House, there will be the opening ceremony of an exhibition on 4 Decades of Vietnam Film Festival with 300 photos and documents of films gaining Golden Lotus Prizes, portraits of artists getting prizes at film festivals. Particularly, in the morning of December 17th, there will be informal talks on Vietnam cinema-photography - Real Situation and Solutions, where the managers, movie makers receive the comments of generations of film makers, artists and correspondents…on Vietnam real situation. The opening ceremony of the 17th Vietnam Film Festival will be at 8pm on December 15th and broadcast live on VTV2 channel. The closing and awarding ceremony will be at 8pm on December 17th, broadcast live on VTV1 channel of Vietnam Television Station.

There is the participation of 108 films by 30 movie units, including 17 feature movies, 5 video feature movies, 10 documentaries, 52 video documentaries, 8 scientific movies, 16 cartoons.

Five categories of movies-videos, documentaries, scientific films and animations- will be screened during the event.

The film festival targets to honour national film industry achievements during 2009-2011 while providing artists, managers, producers and film distributors with an opportunity to exchange experiences and promote development.
